OUR HISTORY
2004
The Habbit Factory had humble beginnings when it was established by Abbs Cross Academy and Susan Wilson.
Meeting once a week at Abbs Cross Academy, Susan ran workshops voluntary supported by a voluntary team which were named “The Blue Tees” by our young people.
2005
We were fortunate to be selected as the Mayor of Havering's Charity, awarding us with £10,000 in funding.
2011
Due to a growing workload and workshop cancellations, Susan handed over the reins to Lee Giles, our current Artistic Director/CEO and a former member and volunteer. Lee brought a fresh perspective, passion, and drive, resulting in regular workshops that attracted more members and volunteers. With a fresh outlook, drive and passion workshops became regular and gained interest from local families where numbers of members and volunteers began to rise.
2013
We collaborated with the community, children, and young people to rebrand as The Habbit Factory and become a registered charity with a new board of trustees and constitution.
Alongside this, we were asked to open another hub at the newly built Myplace Centre, Harold Hill, and Whybridge School in Rainham, to fulfil the need for our work in those different areas.
Following conversations with schools in the area we partnered with two schools in Harold Hill to provide short term engagement educational workshops in schools and after school clubs. Increasing our earned income and creating a sustainable model. This expansion also allowed us to increase our numbers significantly by offering longer term engagement in our community programme.
In this year we co-created our first ever performance, showcased at the Myplace Centre in Harold Hill. All 3 of our Hubs came together for one performance.
2015
Charity status was finally awarded.
With 3 hubs full and membership requests coming from Harold Hill that we couldn’t accommodate, we partnered with the Salvation Army, Harold Hill to open a brand-new hub to accommodate more children & young people.
2016
With a want to provide opportunities for children and young people to perform in a theatre, in January, we sold out two performances at the Queens Theatre, Hornchurch. “I never thought someone like me would have the opportunity to do something like this” – Member.
2017
With three members turning 18 in 2017 and growing interest from parents, we opened our adult company.
2018
Following consultation with young people and families around the lack of affordable pantomime ticket options within the local area and the intrigue to see our team play lead role, we decided to trial our annual fundraising pantomime project in collaboration with the Myplace Centre, Harold Hill.
2020
The pandemic forced us to shut down our hubs and workshops, but we continued to engage our community through social media activity.
Our team (all freelance) took leave to save the organisation from financial turmoil but worked tirelessly, reaching out to other organisations for advice and help.
2021
With the support of the Queen's Theatre, Hornchurch, and other local partners, we secured funding from Arts Council England for organisational development. Workshops fully returned and were back to the same numbers as pre-pandemic.
2022
After successfully raising turnover from £45k to £72k and welcoming a new staff member, we performed two large-scale co-created performances and sold out four productions of our returning pantomime, which starred our staff, volunteers, and children and young people for the first time.
2023
With short-term sustainability achieved over the past two years, resulting in a rising turnover of £130k, we are now embarking on a long-term strategic planning process to ensure our long-term viability.

Jack and the beanstalk Pantomime
Myplace Centre
– FULL COMPANY –
The Habbit Factory achieved its greatest artistic success so far with this production. In previous years, only the Blue Tees performed in the pantomime project, but our goal was to provide more opportunities for children and young people. As a result, we opened up participation to our Junior and Senior company, resulting in a larger and more diverse cast and a truly inclusive pantomime.
Initially, we had planned for three performances, but ticket sales were so popular that all three sold out three weeks before the production. With financial support from Havering Changing, which aimed to support our accessibility goals, we were able to add another performance, which also sold out. We are proud to note that 35% of our audience had no prior connection to the charity and did not know anyone in the production, which helped to spread our message and raise our profile within the community.
This production was supported by Havering Changing.

Starring our professional staff, Blue Tees and for the first time this year, as our ensemble, our children and young people from The Habbit Factory.

History
Queens Theatre, Hornchurch
– CHILDREN'S COMPANY –
Building upon our perfected practice of inclusivity, we embarked on a creative endeavour aimed at crafting a truly original production. Titled "History," the narrative unfolded within the confines of a school classroom, where students were tasked with writing essays about their favourite moments in history. Our vision was to present real-life stories in a fresh and unique manner, tailoring them to each character's personality, preferences, and knowledge on the subject. This approach resulted in a memorable scene featuring Henry VIII, cleverly set in the familiar context of the popular TV program "Take Me Out." The culmination of our efforts came to life through three remarkable performances, each one drawing a sell-out crowd. A total of 200 children and young people had the opportunity to take the stage, supported by a dedicated team of 28 volunteer Blue Tees. The Queens Theatre in Hornchurch served as the perfect backdrop for this grand production, further elevating the experience. Through "History," we not only provided a platform for our young performers to showcase their talent but also nurtured their individuality by incorporating their unique perspectives into the storytelling. The result was a tapestry of captivating narratives and memorable moments that left a lasting impact on both the participants and the audience.
Synopsis – “The Habbit Factory children's groups will be performing "History" as their yearly performance at the queens theatre. A class of 10 students write up about moments in history. Not all have been written down correctly... Fun for all the family.”

Twice Upon a Time
Queens Theatre, Hornchurch
– CHILDREN'S COMPANY –
Ignited by the collective passion for fairytales among our members and volunteers, we embarked on a remarkable journey of co-creating a musical production that brought together a multitude of beloved fairytale characters. Led by a delightful pantomime Dame, we affectionately titled the production "Twice upon a Time." Drawing inspiration from heartfelt conversations with our young people, we set out to craft a unique script that deviated from the common "cut and paste" approach seen in other productions. Our musical not only embraced the enchantment of fairytales but also infused it with the spirit of traditional pantomimes, incorporating elements of comedy and humor. However, we dared to challenge the conventional notion of "good versus evil." By shedding light on the stories of traditional "bad guys," we unveiled the complexity of their characters, revealing that there are two sides to every tale. This fresh perspective resonated deeply with the audience, and one attendee even took to social media, tweeting, "People could learn a lot from this small charity with a big heart." Through our innovative and heartfelt approach, we succeeded in delivering a production that captivated audiences, while also imparting valuable life lessons. Our small charity, driven by boundless passion and compassion, demonstrated that even the most familiar stories can be reimagined with depth and nuance, leaving a lasting impact on all who experienced the magic of "Twice upon a Time." Synopsis – “Created by the Blue Tees using the minds of our members we have a pantomime with a twist. Good Vs Evil in the fairytale world. Who will live happily ever after?”

Pop of Ages
MyPlace Centre
– CHILDREN'S COMPANY –
In November 2014, a remarkable milestone was reached as approximately 170 members from our three hubs joined forces to present a captivating and original co-created musical titled "Pop of Ages," orchestrated by the talented Blue Tees. The stage was set at the esteemed Myplace Centre in Harold Hill, where all three performances were met with overwhelming success, drawing in a sold-out crowd of 200 attendees each.
At the heart of the story was the endearing character of 'Grandpa,' entrusted with the care of his two grandchildren. Their chance discovery of a treasure chest, brimming with artifacts from Grandpa's past, ignited a flood of nostalgic memories as the children unearthed each item and photograph. This heartwarming journey triggered one of the most memorable sketches, known as 'Bill and Ben.'
While our previous shows had graced the halls of Myplace and local school venues, this moment marked a significant leap forward, as we sought a larger and more fitting stage.
